How often should my tank be cleaned?

Most tanks should be cleaned out about every 3-4 years based on a four person occupancy.

Should I be using any sort of additive to help my system fuction such as yeast or the additives I see on television?

It is not recommended for you to put any additive into your tank. If you have a septic tank then all the bacteria requried for the tank to work correctly is natural. Aeration systems create the bacteria via the aerator.

What does it mean if my system is backing up into my basement?

This could be the indication of a number of problems.

  • Your tank may need to be cleaned. Refer to the Tank Cleaning Page
  • There may be a clog in the the sewer line that leads to the tank. It can be cabled or vaccumed out to open up the line.
  • There could be a problem with your drain field that is stopping it from taking water. There may be a broken pipe in the drain field which would have to be repaired. The drain field may be stopped up with sludge and could need to be vaccumed out.
  • If your system includes a lift station, there could be a problem with the pump. For more information, visit the Lift Station Maintenance Page
